Wave-induced mixing within a gravity-driven surface current

چکیده
An increasing awareness of environmental issues, coupled with a number of recent events, has focused considerable attention on the likely consequences of a large oil spill. If the impact of these accidental releases is to be minimises, the risk assessment and contingency planning must be based upon a sound understanding of the dispersion process. This is required to determine both the lateral spreading of the oil slick and the vertical mixing within the water column. Although a number of oil slick propagation models are available there are no existing solutions that adequately take into account the additional mixing associated with the wave climate. Indeed, it is widely believed that this uncertainty was responsible for the inability of the models applied to the Braer spillage (1993) to predict the extent of the oil contamination.

متن کاملDispersion of Torsional Surface Wave in a Pre-Stressed Heterogeneous Layer Sandwiched Between Anisotropic Porous Half-Spaces Under Gravity
The study of surface waves in a layered media has their viable application in geophysical prospecting. This paper presents an analytical study on the dispersion of torsional surface wave in a pre-stressed heterogeneous layer sandwiched between a pre-stressed anisotropic porous semi-infinite medium and gravitating anisotropic porous half-space. The non-homogeneity within the intermediate layer a...

Asymptotically exact and nonlocal third order nonlinear evolution equations are derivedfor two counterpropagating surface capillary gravity wave packets in deep water in thepresence of wind flowing over water. From these evolution equations stability analysis ismade for a uniform standing surface capillary gravity wave trains for longitudinal perturbation. Instability condition is obtained and g...
متن کاملDiapycnal Mixing and Internal Waves
Diapycnal mixing is an integral factor in the meridional overturning circulation of the ocean. The slow upwelling in the ocean interior across density surfaces requires counteracting diapycnal diffusion. Diapycnal diffusion in a stably stratified fluid requires mechanical energy and the availability of this energy might well be the controlling factor in setting the strength of the overturning c...
متن کاملSimulation of Gravity Wave Propagation in Free Surface Flows by an Incompressible SPH Algorithm
This paper presents an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) model to simulate wave propagation in a free surface flow. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a Lagrangian framework using a three-step fractional method. In the first step, a temporary velocity field is provided according to the relevant body forces. This velocity field is renewed in the second step to include t...
